HARRISBURG — Sen. Lisa Baker (R-20) and Rep. Jeff Olsommer (R-139) announced today Milford Borough will be receiving more than $300,000 in state funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) grant program to improve traffic safety and accessibility at key intersections.
Milford Borough was awarded $307,857 to make walking safer and more convenient for residents and visitors. The project will install rectangular rapid flashing beacons and re-stripe crosswalks at 11 key intersections along Harford Street. In addition, traffic signals at the Broad Street and Harford Street intersection will be retimed to include an all-pedestrian phase, giving people a safer way to cross in every direction.
“Investing in pedestrian infrastructure — like rapid flashing beacons, refreshed crosswalks and enhanced signal timing — is a critical step toward safer streets in Milford,” the legislators said. “With this award, we’re taking meaningful action to protect residents, encourage walking and strengthen our downtown’s accessibility and vitality.”
“The monies received through the ARLE program will go a long way toward making the streets safer for our residents and visitors,” said Milford Borough Council President Joe Dooley. “I and others in in our small town have personally experienced near misses with vehicles while crossing Milford Borough streets. The grant will be used to purchase crosswalk signs and other safety measures to protect the public and make Milford Borough a truly walkable community. Kudos to Sen. Baker and Rep. Olsommer for working with us to secure this critical funding.”
The ARLE program funds projects that enhance safety, improve mobility and reduce congestion at signalized intersections. Funding is generated through fines collected from red-light violations in Philadelphia and reinvested statewide in traffic safety improvements.
