Statement by Senator Lisa Baker on the Sentencing of Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella

Following the announcement that former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella was sentenced to 28 years in prison, Senator Lisa Baker made the following statement:

"Judge Kosik has rendered a public service by handing down the type of tough sentence that extreme public corruption warrants.

No sentence can truly compensate for the thousands of lives disrupted or entirely repair the damage inflicted on the juvenile justice system.  But I hope this can bring a small measure of closure to the individuals and families so deeply or tragically affected by injustice.

The lengthy sentence reflects the serious sanction that the community wanted to see placed, in contrast to the comparatively light sentences other public corruption cases in different parts of the state have resulted in.

It seems particularly appropriate given the utter lack of remorse or contrition on the part of Mark Ciavarella, during the investigation, the review of the thousands of tainted cases, and the trial."
