Baker Supports Responsible Spending Plan With No Tax Increase

Harrisburg – As projected revenue shortfalls approach $3 billion, Senator Lisa Baker (R-20) voted today to advance a state budget with no tax increases.

"People are struggling to make ends meet," Baker said.  "Families are looking for ways to trim expenses, and we have to do the same."

In addition to the cuts Governor Rendell presented in February, the $27.3 billion spending plan includes additional reductions required to solve Pennsylvania's budget deficit.

"Regrettably nearly every group receiving state funding or depending on state services is affected by the cost controls at the heart of this proposal," said Baker.  "There are not any pleasant choices.  We do not have enough revenue coming in, so there are only two ways to bridge this gap – reducing spending or increasing taxes.  Everywhere I go people are telling me not to raise taxes."

Baker added that the proposal is a starting point to begin the debate and negotiation process necessary to adopt a fiscally responsible budget.
