Senate/House Veterans Affairs Committees to Hold Joint Hearing on
Governor's Plan to Close Scotland School for Veterans' Children
The Senate and House Veterans Affairs and Emergency
Preparedness Committees will hold a joint hearing to listen to testimony on
the governor’s proposal to close the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children,
according to committee chairs Senator Lisa Baker (R-20) and Representative
Anthony Melio (D-141).
The Hearing will take place at 1:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, March 11th, in Hearing Room 1 of the North Office Building in
Harrisburg.
Established in 1895, the Scotland School for Veterans’
Children provides educational services for the children of hundreds of
Pennsylvania veterans. In his budget address, Governor Rendell announced
plans to close the school, as well as the Scranton School for the Deaf.
Among those scheduled to testify at the hearing are
representatives of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the
Department of Education, various veterans’ organizations, and staff, faculty
and parents from the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children.
Because of time constraints, there will not be an
opportunity for a public comment period. However, written testimony will be
accepted by the committees throughout budget negotiations. The public can
also submit comments at
senatorbaker.com following the hearing.
