Senator Baker

March 15, 2010 - Senator Baker presented Tom Foley, President and CEO of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross, with a citation designating March 2010 as "American Red Cross Month" in Pennsylvania. Senator Baker's grandfather – Ervin Calhoun – was a soldier in the Spanish-American War of 1898 and was part of the 1st Regiment of the Pennsylvania Voluntary Infantry. While encamped in Chickamauga, Georgia, some members of the regiment contracted malaria. In partnership with the American Red Cross, a train picked up the sickened soldiers and transferred them to the City of Philadelphia to receive medical attention. The Red Cross flag pictured in the photo was on the train when this transfer occurred. It currently hangs in Senator Baker's Harrisburg office.
