Whether as a member of Back Mountain Regional Fire & EMS, or at the Dallas Harvest Festival, Irem Shrine Circus, or one of the many other events to which she volunteers her time, you have probably seen Megan working to help others. It is no surprise the community has stepped up in her time of need.

The #PASenate kicked off the 2023-2024 Legislative Session with historic achievements for women with the election of our first female president pro tempore and a record 17 female senators serving in office. Here we are, minus new mom Senator Amanda Cappelletti, joining Pat Halpin-Murphy, from @pabreastcancer to celebrate the passage of Senate Bill 8. The legislation is also the first of its kind, requiring coverage for genetic testing and counseling, as well as breast MRI and ultrasound, at no cost for those at high risk for this cancer.

I was honored to support the unanimous confirmation of Chris Paris as the next @pastatepolice Commissioner. He is highly regarded for his background and performance. In his nearly twenty-five years of dedicated service, he has steadily advanced in rank. As a northeastern Pennsylvanian, he is well aware of our public safety needs and concerns and is familiar with the partners in our emergency response network. I got to know him during the difficult assignment he had while overseeing the Blooming Grove barracks where he demonstrated his tremendous ability to lead in the face of the unimaginable. I have no doubt he will continue to serve honestly and faithfully and uphold the honor of the force.

It was great to meet with Lynn Evans Biga from Luzerne County Head Start and her team. We discussed the critical work of the Task Force on lead exposure established through Senate Resolution 33 in 2017. Additionally, we discussed ways for our counties to access important available resources to remove the presence of lead in children’s homes.

I'm pleased to welcome Ryan P. Shovlin as legal counsel and executive director of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Attorney Shovlin is the son of Dr. Joseph P. Shovlin and Lisa B. Shovlin of Clarks Summit. He's a graduate of Abington Heights High School, Bucknell University and Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. He served as a Deputy District Attorney in Dauphin County. Attorney Shovlin’s prosecutorial experience and extensive dealings with individuals across the criminal justice system will be a tremendous asset.

Josh Shapiro and Austin Davis were sworn in as Pennsylvania’s 48th governor and 35th lieutenant governor yesterday. Governor Shapiro delivered a speech that was forceful and inclusive. He identified several priority issues for which there is bipartisan support Based on his experience as a state Representative, county commissioner, and attorney general, our expectation is that he will be more respectful of differing viewpoints and more considerate of community interests. That has been my impression when we have worked on issues such as opioid abuse and justice for abuse victims. We have a lot of work to do in education, health care, public safety, justice, protection of rights, and other issue areas that require clear thinking and the ability to bring together disparate interests toward solid solutions. The manner in which he has assembled a representative cabinet and leadership team sends a positive signal that this administration will try to build bridges with the General Assembly, and his selections from northeastern Pennsylvania, Major Chris Paris as the Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner, and former Representative Mike Carroll PennDOT Secretary, will serve our area well. #inaguration #pasenate

Meet Lisa Baker

Senator Lisa Baker is serving her fifth term representing the 20th Senatorial District, which includes substantial parts of Luzerne and Wayne counties, and all of Pike, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties. She is noted for her accessibility in the district, for her practical and reasonable approach to problem-solving and her bipartisan work on constructive legislation. Numerous community organizations and projects have benefitted from her concerted advocacy. Working with county and municipal officials, she has helped to secure essential funding to support community priorities.
