Rare Disease Awareness Day

Listen

Senator Lisa Baker offers remarks recognizing June 19, 2018 as Rare Disease Awareness Day in Pennsylvania. There are approximately 1.2 million Pennsylvanians who suffer from rare diseases, and nearly 7,000 such diseases exist. A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than 200,000 Americans. At a press conference in the Capitol Rotunda, Sen. Baker, Rep. Marcy Toepel, R-Montgomery County, the National Organization of Rare Disorders (NORD) and Life Sciences Pennsylvania joined Pennsylvanians diagnosed with a rare disease to focus attention on these maladies. Among those on hand was Marie Conley, a patient with Cushing’s Disease and adrenal insufficiency, who founded The Conley Cushing Disease Fund.
