Luzerne County Senior Expo Slated For Oct. 13

LUZERNE COUNTY — State Sens. Lisa Baker (R-20th) and John Yudichak (D-14th) and State Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-120th) are inviting area senior citizens to their 2016 Luzerne County Senior Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13 at the 109th Field Artillery Armory, 280 Market St. in Wilkes-Barre. This is the sixth year the event is being held.

The Senior Expo will feature vendors from local, county and state agencies to answer questions and provide useful information about their programs and services to seniors. In addition, there will be free refreshments, giveaways and free health screenings. Flu shots will also be available for free with an insurance card.

Attendees will find information related to government services, Social Security, health care and insurance, legal issues and fraud protection, senior financial issues and exercise and nutrition tips.

“There are so many great programs available to help our seniors,” Sen. Baker said. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to connect our seniors with the agencies, business and organizations in our community that are working so hard for them every day.”

The event attracts more than 1,000 seniors annually and for the first time, the Luzerne County Transportation Authority is offering bus service to the expo from area senior centers and high rise apartment buildings. If seniors are interested in this service, please call 570-288-9356.

“The senior expo provides valuable information on programs and services to improve the quality of life for our area seniors,” said Sen. John Yudichak. “In addition to numerous state and local agencies who deliver senior services, we will also be offering special educational seminars in how to prevent marketing scams that unscrupulously target area senior citizens.”

Those attending are being urged to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation. These items will be distributed to area food pantries.

Rep. Kaufer is co-hosting the event for the first time.

“I am pleased to join Sens. Baker and Yudichak in hosting our upcoming Senior Expo. By coming together, I believe that we are better able to serve the seniors in our community. This will be a wonderful opportunity for seniors across Luzerne County to access the information and resources which they need, all in one location,” Kaufer said.

Among the more than 100 vendors are state agencies, health care systems and insurers and other senior-related organizations.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Sen. Yudichak’s office at 570-740-2434; Sen. Baker’s office at 570-675-3931; or Rep. Kaufer’s office at 283-1001.
