Scholarship Available for Valley Forge Military Academy

HARRISBURG — High school seniors residing in the 20th Senatorial District who are interested in receiving a $12,000 annual legislative scholarship to attend Valley Forge Military College are encouraged to apply for the Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative through Sen. Lisa Baker’s Office.

The selected recipient will receive guaranteed admission and a partial scholarship for up to two years as long as they maintain a 2.0 GPA while enrolled.

Students who attend Valley Forge’s two-year transfer college can then apply these credits to academically competitive four-year colleges, universities or service academies.

“Any student with good grades and a commitment to service can apply for the appointment,” Baker explained.  “If scholarship students continue on to a service academy, they will be able to obtain a top-notch college education at virtually no cost to the student.”

The program is funded by the Valley Forge Military College.  No state funds are used.

Scholarship applicants must have earned a minimum SAT score of 1,000 (or an ACT score of 20) and an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.  They should also be active in sports or other extracurricular activities, have leadership skills, strong character, and a service-oriented commitment. The full amount awarded depends upon the academic achievement of the student selected. The minimum annual award is $12,000 for a high school GPA of 2.5, rising to an annual award of $17,500 for a high school GPA of 3.75.

Applications are due by February 1, 2016.

Copies of an applicant’s high school transcript, along with ACT scores or SAT scores, are also required to apply for the scholarship.

Valley Forge Military College was founded in 1935 and has 350 full-time cadets.

The 20th Senatorial District includes parts of Luzerne and Susquehanna counties and all of Pike, Wayne and Wyoming counties.
