HARRISBURG (March 4, 2014) – Beginning March 1, Pennsylvania veterans can apply for a special designation on their driver’s license to honor their service as one of the Commonwealth’s 950,000 military veterans, Sen. Lisa Baker (R-20) announced. The veterans’ mark of honor will include an American flag graphic with the word “veteran” printed underneath. The new designation was part of a two-bill package advanced by Baker last year.
“The veteran community has sought this designation for years, and I’m pleased that we were able to work with PennDOT to expedite the issuing of this special driver’s license,” said Baker, who chairs the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee. “This patriotic symbol will help them to identify themselves as a veteran when they apply for programs, benefits and services, and even store discounts.”
Veterans can apply for the new license at any PennDOT office, or online at www.dot.state.pa.us. The licenses will not carry any additional costs other than the existing replacement price charged by PennDOT. A veteran can elect to replace his or her current license or wait until that license is due to be replaced.
“Veterans often ask how they can provide proof of military service without having to carry around their formal discharge papers,” Baker said. “Local veterans’ service organizations such as the American Legion and VFW often say that veterans frequently come to them to obtain an identification card. The driver’s license with the special designation will not only fulfill that need but also acknowledge the service and sacrifice of our state’s veterans.”
