Horses Healing Children at Marley’s Mission

On this month’s Baker Report, Senator Lisa Baker (R-20) visits Marley’s Mission, which offers equine-based therapy, free-of-charge, for child trauma victims in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna and Wayne counties.

Born from a need to comfort a 5-year-old who suffered a brutal sexual attack, Marley’s Mission has helped more than 250 children.  Specially trained trauma therapists and equine specialists employ a team approach to treatment and work cooperatively to develop individual plans to teach each child an alternate way of expressing feelings and emotions.

“Marley’s Mission focuses on growth and healing,” Baker said.   “These children have experienced unspeakable suffering and have not responded to traditional therapy.  Working with animals is a non-threatening way to break down barriers, learn trust and develop personal confidence in order to move on from tragedy.”
