Senators Seek Furlough Protections for National Guard Technicians

Soon after automatic spending cuts went into effect at the federal level, Maj. Gen. Wesley Craig predicted that federal sequestration will not have an overwhelmingly negative effect on our nation’s military and our state of readiness, except in one critical area—military technicians. These technicians maintain our military equipment and are vital to our national security, yet they are the only uniformed personnel not to be protected from the sequestration cuts. At the request of the National Guard Association, Sen. Baker and Sen. Robbins urged their congressional delegation to provide legislative protection for military technicians from these furloughs. Approximately 53,000 National Guard military technicians are affected, including 1,800 in Pennsylvania alone.
